Thinking about building your own deck? Great choice! A deck adds value to your home and provides a fantastic outdoor space for relaxation and entertainment. Let's go through some important tips and tricks to help you get started.

Plan Your Deck and Materials

Firstly, you need a plan. Know the area where you want your deck and sketch a layout on paper. Decide on the size, shape, and materials. This will save you time and prevent mistakes.

Consider the purpose of your deck. Is it for relaxing, entertaining, or both? Knowing how you will use it helps you decide on the design and features.

You should then pick what type of decking boards to use. Your first choice is to select between timber or composite. Each has its pros and cons, so choose one that best fits your needs and budget. Composite decking, for example, is low-maintenance and durable, while wood decking offers a natural look but requires more upkeep.

Composite is available in a number of different colors

Timber is also avalible in a variety of colours, here are some of the most popular timber species:

Merbau: Known for its durability, attractive appearance, and resistance to termites and decay. By far the most popular board on this list.
Spotted Gum: A strong and durable hardwood with a beautiful color range from pale to dark brown.
Blackbutt: Durable and fire-resistant, suitable for bushfire-prone areas, with a warm, honey-colored hue.
Jarrah: A dense hardwood with a rich red color and high resistance to weather and termites.
Ironbark: Extremely hard and durable, with colors ranging from pale brown to dark chocolate.
Silvertop Ash: Durable and fire-resistant, with a light brown to yellowish color.
Cypress Pine (not recommended): Naturally termite-resistant and durable, with a distinctive grain and yellow-brown color.
We do not recommend Cypress Pine or treated pine decking boards. These are softwoods and are less durable compared to hardwood options.

Important Things to Look Out for When Building a New Deck

Make sure you consider these tips before you start if you want to ensure a high-quality deck. Here’s a basic list:

• Posts/Stumps are not timber set directly into concrete pads.

• Weed mat under decking subfloor.

• Subfloor water protection.

• Screwed decking boards, not nailed.

• String line decking board runs to ensure true and straight decking gaps.

Posts/Stumps
When installing the posts or stumps for your deck, avoid setting timber directly into concrete pads. Timber can rot over time if it is in constant contact with moisture. Instead, use galvanized steel post anchors to elevate the timber posts above the concrete, providing better protection against moisture and extending the life of your deck.

Weed Mat
A weed mat under the decking subfloor is essential to prevent weeds and grass from growing up through your deck. It also helps in maintaining a clean and neat look for your outdoor space. Make sure to lay the weed mat properly and secure it in place before installing the subfloor.

Subfloor Protection
Protecting your subfloor from water damage is crucial for the longevity of your deck. Apply a waterproof membrane or use joist tape on the top of the joists to prevent water from seeping into the wood. This will help in reducing the risk of rot and decay.

Screwed Decking Boards
Always use screws instead of nails to secure your decking boards. Screws provide a stronger hold and prevent the boards from loosening over time. They also minimize the risk of the boards warping or splitting. Stainless steel or coated screws are recommended for outdoor use to prevent rust and corrosion.

String Lined Decking Boards
To ensure your decking boards are straight and evenly spaced, use a string line. After installing the first four rows of boards, run a string line along the length of the deck to check for alignment. This helps in maintaining straight lines and consistent gaps between the boards, giving your deck a professional and polished look.
